Mechanical Engineering Services Department

This responsible for initiating and reviewing policies, laws, standards and regulations for acquisition, inspection and boarding off of Government vehicles, machinery and equipment.

The Department is composed of the following divisions:

  1. Mechanical Engineering Services (Operations);and
  2. Mechanical Engineering Services (Inspections)

Key Functions:

  • Continuously render advice to government departments and the public in mechanical engineering particularly on aspects related to vehicles and machinery.
  • Inspect Government equipment and vehicles for condition assessment and onward advice as to future usage.
  • Maintain and manage records of Government vehicles and machinery with continual updates of new procurements, registered and boarded off.
  • Carry out semi- annual inspection of government equipment to determine their mechanical conditions carried out and status reports thus generated.
  • Evaluate equipment and vehicles for procurement, arbitration or disposal purposes.
  • Guide in setting policies and standards for models/makes of vehicles for government usage.
  • Set standards and requirements for private garages/workshops that repair government vehicles, and equipment.
  • Plan, manage and operate the Ministry's residual equipment and machinery.
  • Assist the District and Local Governments in procurement, planning and managing the maintenance of their road equipment and machinery.
  • Monitor the operation and maintenance of ferries which serve as a continuation of the national roads across inland and water bodies,
  • Plan, manage and maintain core equipment services such as mobile cranes, low-loaders and fork lifts for emergencies and disaster preparedness, transportation, assembly and launching of emergency bridges.

Key Outputs:

  • Advice continuously rendered to government departments and the public in mechanical engineering particularly on aspects related to vehicles and machinery.
  • Government equipment and vehicles inspected for condition assessment and onward advice given as to future usage.
  • Records of Government vehicles and machinery with continual updates of new procurements registered and boarded off maintained and managed.
  • Semi - annual inspection of government equipment carried out to determine their mechanical conditions and status reports generated.
  • Equipment and vehicles for procurement, arbitration and disposal purposes evaluated.
  • Guidance in setting policies and standards for models/make of vehicles for government usage provided.
  • Standards and requirements for private garages/workshops that repair government vehicles and equipment set.
  • Ministry's residual equipment and machinery planned, managed and operated.
  • District Local Governments assisted in procurement, planning and managing the maintenance of their road equipment and machinery.
  • Operation and maintenance of ferries which serve as a continuation of the national roads across inland and water bodies monitored.
