Roads and Bridges Department

This is responsible for construction and maintenance policies, laws and standards for the construction of roads and bridges transport infrastructure and services.
The Department is composed of following divisions and unit:

  1. District and Community Access Roads Division
  2. Urban Roads Division;
  3. Bridges and Drainage division; and
  4. Surveying unit

Key Functions:

  • Monitor the performance of the Uganda National Roads Authority.
  • Prepare guidelines for the maintenance of District, Community Access Roads, National Roads and Bridges.
  • Carry out capacity building in Local Governments on development and maintenance of transport infrastructure; and monitoring their performance.
  • Formulate policy guide lines on roads and bridges management.
  • Provide technical guidance to Local Governments on matters of road transport infrastructure.
  • Enforce roads and bridges, technical specifications, standards and regulations; and
  • Monitor civil works of Civil Aviation Authority.

Key Outputs:

  • Performance of the Uganda National Roads Authority monitored.
  • Guidelines for the maintenance of District, and Community Access Roads, National Roads, Bridges and harbors prepared.
  • Capacity building in local governments on development and maintenance of transport infrastructure carried out; and their performance monitored.
  • Policy guidelines on roads and bridges management formulated.
  • Technical guidance to local governments on matters of transport infrastructure provided.
  • Roads, bridges, airports and water ways technical specifications, standards and regulations enforced.
  • Civil works of Civil Aviation Authority monitored.
