Transport Services & Infrastructure Department

This will be responsible for development, improvement and modernization of transport services to ensure equitable distribution of transport services for socio-economic development of the country.

The department is comprised of the following divisions:

  1. Air and Road Transport Services
  2. Water and Rail Transport Services.

Key Functions:

  • Develop policies and regulations that allow equitable development and distribution of transport services for economic and social development of the country.
  • Implement plans for transport services and infrastructure in relation to road, water, rail and air transport.
  • Carry out research to identify requirements for modernization, improvement and development of transport services and infrastructure.
  • Assess the impact of each mode of transport in respect of the socio-economic development and poverty eradication in the country.
  • Monitor and evaluate the operations of Public Corporations in this sub-sector (Uganda Railways Corporation and CAA) to ensure efficiency and adherence to standards.
  • Promote collaboration linkages and liaise with sub-regional, regional and international organizations concerned with provision of transport services and infrastructure with a view of adopting the current international development trends.
  • Formulate, assess and evaluate the cost of transport service in terms of tariffs, user charges, safety measures and license fees in the Transport Sector.
  • Integrate HIV/AIDS and other transport concerns in the development and provision of transport services and infrastructure.

Key Outputs:

  • Policies and regulations that allow equitable development and distribution of transport services developed for economic and social development of the country.
  • Plans for transport services and infrastructure in relation to road, water, rail and air transport implemented.
  • Research carried out to and requirements for modernization, improvement and development of transport services and infrastructure identified.
  • Impact of each mode of transport in respect of the socio-economic development and poverty eradication in the country assessed.
  • Collaboration linkages promoted and liaison with sub-regional, regional and international organizations concerned with provision of transport services and infrastructure done; with a view of adopting the current international development trends.
  • Activities of sub-regional, regional and international organizations concerned with development of all modes of transport coordinated and harmonized with a view of aligning transport services with international development trends.
  • HIV/AIDS and other transport concerns in the development and provision of transport services integrated; and
  • Socio-economic research on the different modes of transport carried out and impact of the various interventions/investment viz poverty reduction carried out.
